I've snorkeled, but always wanted to dive. The shop at Broadway and Mill (it used to be Ocean Planet, but is now Oasis Divers offers diving instruction/certification.
They have three packages. Mask, snorkel, fins, and other personal items are not included, but they have them for purchase at the shop, or you can get some things on Craigslist, stores like Sports Authority, or online. Depending on the quality you want, it ranges from $50 to $200 (or more, but I don’t advise beginners of anything to spend a lot of money). I got a decent mask and snorkel at Sports Authority for $30 and fins/booties on craigslist for $35. However, I saw cheap combos of mask, snorkel and fins for $30 at Sports Authority. All classes come with manuals, and a few other perks. Here are the packages:
Reef Shark: $230 for closed water (in their pool), basic certification. Open water certification is extra and can be tacked onto one of their many trips.
Tiger Shark: $510 and you get closed water certified at their pool and open water certified at Lake Pleasant.
Whale Shark: $670 and you get closed water certified at their pool, and open water certified in San Carlos Mexico, plus a 3 night stay in the San Carlos Plaza Resort.
I’m hoping to sign up for the Whale Shark package. They have many different classes to choose from, I’m looking at a weekend course. Meet Friday night, all day Saturday, all day Sunday, and by the end, you have your closed Water Certification.
Obviously, it’s a bit pricey, so I’m saving my pennies and am hoping to take the closed water class around mid April and then go to San Carlos in mid May (right after finals).
If I get positive response, I’ll see if they can offer us a club discount. A little quid-pro-quo: we send people to them, and we get x-amount off. I’ll keep this thread posted on that.
They also have monthly BBQs where you can go try scuba diving. You get into the gear and see if it’s something you want to spend the money on. Their next one is March 14th, I think. I’ll post that on this thread too.
So I’m doing this. I thought some other people might like to as well. Let me know.
