I just bought a Petzl Myo XP LED Headlamp (6/16/06) from REI with all my dividends and gift certificates.
I give this item four and a half stars (out of five)
Treasure Matt and I just took this baby out for a test spin on a night bicycle ride around Mesa. While on high with the diffuse lens on, my 1 super-led dwarfed Matt’s 7-led headlamp. We couldn’t even see his light when mine was pointed in the same direction. Totally cool. Also, this headlamp has a boost button, that with the diffuse lens off, you could see it reflect off of metal over half a city bock away. (more than half way across ASU). The boost really didn’t improve the bike ride much, but then I went into my neighbors yard with a lot of trees and branches, and tried it there….not quite night and day, but what a difference nonetheless. You notice the manufactures claim of 50% brighter. The light really bounces around in the close quarters of a forest like surrounding. (can’t wait to go back packing.)
Supposedly, the 3 AA batteries should last 70 hours on high in Arizona temperatures. I’ll modify this post, when I reach that point. I’m guessing more like 45. (still pretty good)
I was looking for a light that uses AA s so I can keep all my backpacking electronics using the same battery so I don’t have to tote different ones, and I can swap them out incase of an emergency.
The guy at REI said the headlamp was waterproof up to one meter underwater. Just by looking at it, I’d say maybe if you just dropped it and picked it up real quick, but a minute under, and the battery house would be flooded.
Cons #1: its 10 ounces on your head. I didn’t wear the included top strap, after an hour, I really felt it on my ears weighing down.. (reason for the half star missing) but for $10 more you can get the model with the detachable battery house, to hook to your pack or waist or something.
Con #2: the $70 price tag. If I didn’t have all the discounts, I would have bought the $45 version.
I think this light is absolutely great! And would recommend it to anyone. Whether for night hiking or bicycling I think this item will do the trick.
(I just finished engraving my name and number into the lamp, so don’t think about stealing this one, like my last one. To whoever did)
