 Thule Roof rack over Yakima
« Thread Started on Jul 14, 2006, 6:54pm »

I found a Thule (pronounced "Too-Lee") roof rack on Craigslist for $45 including two bike trays and 8 lock cores. All I had to purchase was the fit kit for $50 from REI and it was ready to install.

What I noticed and appreciated about the thule rack is that all the components involved in structure and tension are steel. A few months ago, I bought a Yakima and found that all the new Yakimas have a plastic clip for adjusting the tension. Before the rack was tight enough not to shift on the roof, one of the tower clips broke. I returned it. Also, the thule, in the fit kit, includes a custom polymer playform along with the necessary clips. The yakima only includes the platforms with the towers, so they're a generic flat platform, which doesn't always fit to the contours of certain roofs.

If you're ever looking for random good deals, but not too specific about what you're looking for, craigslist.com is a good place to look.

Couldn't agree more. I bought a Thule kit with box and bike rack for my Jetta a while back and couldn't be more pleased with it :-)
